The nutritional therapy approach to fertility and female health
Nutritional therapy is a patient
centred approach to optimising health and wellbeing. It takes into account the whole person, and works
to understand what the underlying causes are for ill health or body systems not working to their full potential.
Clinically, this approach has been shown to be extremely effective
at supporting reproductive health and female health conditions. For example, digestion,
absorption and elimination influence liver detoxification which in turn may impact on hormone balance. This
is relevant when considering egg and sperm health, or the symptoms associated with PCOS.
Assessing, discussing, resolving
A nutritional therapy consultation involves a one hour meeting in which a thorough case history
is taken, test results (if any) are looked at, and diet and lifestyle factors are considered. Any medications, supplements,
herbs or remedies are noted and checked (as self prescribed supplementation can sometimes miss important contra-indications
with medication). It is not the job of a nutritional therapist to diagnose, claim to treat, or advise against
medication. Nutritional therapy compliments conventional medicine. One of the major
benefits of a nutritional therapy consultation centres round education; this is something often missed in other health care
disciplines. This is extremely helpful for female health conditions or fertility issues. Empowering
an individual to make positive changes can only be achieved if they fully understand what is happening to them,
why it’s happening, and how they can do something to enhance their health naturally.
Nicola Moore believes strongly in evidence based nutrition which is enhanced by her academic
work and research. She is a member of the British Fertility Society which actively promotes the sharing
of knowledge, further education and raising standards of practice and recognises the multi-disciplinary nature of science
and practice of reproductive medicine.
